Most of what we finish will never be photographed. Our clients’ homes are private, and they stay that way. The work travels the way it always has, from one architect, designer or homeowner to the next.

The Practice

Trained in England. Practicing in Los Angeles since 1985.

Red Reddington trained at Brooklyn Technical College in Great Barr, Birmingham, where painting was taught as a discipline: the history of paints, color theory, decorating, and the patience to mix a batch by hand.

In 1985 he was awarded the City & Guilds Advanced Craft Certificate in Painting & Decorating with Distinction, and moved to Los Angeles the same year. After years as a journeyman painter on major hotel projects, he founded Red’s Painting as a licensed general contractor. It remains family owned and operated.

Method

Much more than matching the color you see today.

Whether the surface is new millwork or a landmark’s original plaster, the finish is decided long before the first coat goes on.

i.

Read the surface

Existing paint layers, the original finish, aging and fading, sheen and texture, and how a new coating will behave on what’s already there.

ii.

Specify

Materials and systems chosen for the surface and its conditions: coastal air, canyon sun, historic substrates, fine joinery.

iii.

Sample in every light

Samples are made and judged in different lighting before anything is approved. When a client lives between coasts, the samples travel to them.

iv.

Finish, quietly

Hand-applied and sprayed finishes by a trained team that works cleanly, respects the household and keeps to the schedule.

“Our high-profile client traveled between coasts and Red’s Painting was asked to send samples to New York as well as have samples of the wall at a moment’s notice. Red and his staff were extremely responsive and their work ethic was impeccable.”
